Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about SFMS PTO membership, meetings, and how we support our school community.
What is the South Forsyth Middle School PTO?
The South Forsyth Middle School Parent Teacher Organization (SFMSPTO) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports South Forsyth Middle School through volunteer and financial contributions, strengthening the connection between school and home.
When does my membership start?
If you're the parent or guardian of an incoming sixth grader, you become a full voting member of the PTO in April of your student's fifth-grade year.
How many votes does my household get?
One vote per household at PTO meetings, regardless of how many SFMS students are in the household.
How can I get involved with the SFMS PTO?
Sign up for a volunteer opportunity on our Volunteer page, attend a General PTO meeting, or join a committee — any PTO member in good standing can also run for an Executive Board office.
How often does the PTO meet?
General PTO meetings are held monthly during the school year, with a minimum of two meetings per year. The Executive Board also meets monthly.
Where does money raised by the PTO go?
All shop and fundraising proceeds support SFMS teachers and student programs. PTO financial activity is reconciled monthly, reported to the Executive Board, reviewed independently each year, and audited periodically by Forsyth County Schools.
What happens to PTO funds if the organization ever dissolves?
Per the bylaws, any remaining funds would be donated directly to South Forsyth Middle School, restricted to charitable and educational purposes.
Can any PTO member become an officer?
Yes. Any PTO member in good standing may become an officer — President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Communications Secretary, or Treasurer.
